BM Today's Non-stat Day:

    That's right. No stats today.
All pills were administered as usual, no additions or deletions; oh, except the Aloe Vera gel. I forgot to give it to her at breakfast and supper.
Let's see...for breakfast she had her usual. For lunch she had 8 oz yoghurt (can't remember what kind) and a slice of the bread I baked yesterday spread with the cranberry-honey-orange butter. For dinner she had 1/6th of a Costco chicken pot pie.
Her Bowel Movement happened around 1900. Fairly easy elimination; excellent consistency; very good volume.
She slept a lot today. I'm not sure why. But, since she was eating between naps, I gave up trying to manage stats in the middle of the day, today, and just fed her when she was hungry and pilled her when she needed to be pilled.

Up at 1100, eating by 1150. Good timing. Everything normal. No stats. No stat withdrawal.
Her Bowel Movement occurred about 40 minutes ago, around 1320. Quick delivery; excellent consistency, one turd looked like it might have been hard to expel but she said she had no problem; fair volume; easy clean-up. I'm wondering if some of these felicitous changes in her bowel habits and quality are due to switching entirely to Niferex-150. Now that she's eliminating practically every day, I don't think her colon considers it any longer necessary to dump its entire contents in one sitting.

Because we've been treating my mother's blood sugar to a feast the last few days, I decided to take it this morning, just to see how it's settling down. I was hoping it would be normal but wasn't expecting this. And, it wasn't. So, back to normal eating, for awhile. No more pancakes, sweet rolls, and, if we decide to have sugar, we have it as a Just Desserts dinner.
Her Bowel Movement occurred, as usual, at about 1215 while we were bathing her. Medium volume, excellent elimination, excellent consistency, very easy clean-up. If her bowel movements remain this easy and this regular, I will reinstate toilet paper in her bathroom.
Today is the last course of her antibiotics. Her urine is clear and light. I'm pretty sure we've licked this UTI.

She wanted a chili dog, but we didn't have buns or white bread, so I suggested this...chopping up some polish sausage in the rest of the frozen home made chili, and pairing it with an ear of corn. She dove for it. I love that, with us living together, she is able to eat pretty much what she wants when she wants, gets excellent variety, has many meals designed precisely to her taste and gets a chance to experiment, too, with input ahead of time instead of experimenting by accident.
Blood sugar and blood pressure both look excellent.

I forgot the cinnamon this morning. Considering what she had for breakfast, probably wasn't a good idea to forget it but, oh well.
Otherwise, everything looks good, nothing to report except meds and food and when everything was ingested.

approx 1/3 cup MCS's bread and butter pickles
11.5 oz V-8 juice

Well, you can see the sweet roll at breakfast floating lazily through her blood. I was a little surprised at her blood pressure then realized that I took it immediately after she'd awakened, walked into the bathroom, gone through the whole changing underwear thing, stood up, walked out to the living room and sat down. So, considering that, it's actually quite good.
It is a pleasure not to be giving her medication at her midday meal. I wonder how many people can say that at 87, after a couple of years of internal and external health crises, they are cutting back on medication and supplements (although I'm increasing her iron supplementation)? Oh, god, I remember, the last few years before MPS's mother-in-law died, when she and her husband traveled, they had a small suitcase (like a squashed, old time make-up case) loaded with her medicines. I remember that her husband would freak if he thought they might have forgotten a dose of something. Weird. I don't worry about it if I forget a dosage of any of Mom's stuff. I just roll with the punches, which are usually feathery, if any punches are thrown. I am willing to state, without knowing very much about MPS's mother-in-law's medical history, that part of what did her in early, in her late 60's, I believe, was her prescribed drug history. Makes me shudder.
I remember something similar being discovered regarding my grandmother (my mother's mother) right after my grandfather died. My grandmother was not only on an impressive array of medicines, herself, many of which my mother felt overlapped, but was taking my grandfather's leftovers. I believe my grandmother was about 82 at the time this was discovered. Needless to say, this situation was corrected immediately. As it turned out, many of the conditions for which she was being treated had disappeared and she no longer needed to be medicated for them. As she recovered, over the months, from being over medicated, there were further cutbacks in her meds. She lived to be 93, I think, or 94. If her medicating situation hadn't been discovered and monitored by an advocate (her daughters), she may very well have been killed, in part, by medication, much earlier than she actually died.
Anyway, back to today's lunch. Mom remembered last week, when I reinstated yoghurt on our menu after a couple of years' lapse, that she used to put wheat germ in her yoghurt. I remember the jar in her refrigerator...ohhh, which reminds me, I'd better put the wheat germ in there...I never knew it was for that. It was I who decided to switch the cinnamon from her V-8 juice to her yoghurt. It's more appropriate to a sweet base, and she no longer lingers, sometimes for an hour, over her V-8 juice.
So, the rate of sweets is going to be severely cut back, to former levels, immediately. I think the yoghurt midday (it is surprisingly sweet, almost too sweet for me, artificially) should help keep sweet cravings to a manageable level. I froze all but the two sweet rolls we ate this morning. The rest of the berry custard thing is frozen.
So, I continue to feel like shit, but she's doing fine.

Non-stat Dinner
Dinner:  2045  & Meds
What she ate:  approx 3/4 cup a Mediteranean black bean and corn salad, very tart, delicious
approx 3 Tbl roasted garlic hummus
approx 7 pita chips

100% Aloe Vera gel/1 oz just before meal helps increase the cells' sensitivity to insulin when used with glipizide
Niferex-150 1 150 mg tab with meal to pull her out of what I hope is her temporarily severely anemic state

garlic/1250 mg with meal given for anti-coagulant properties
calcium-vitamin D/500-200 mg with meal believed to be an osteoporosis preventative

Notice that meal? Light, delicious, full of fiber, Mom smacked her lips. I was very curious about her blood sugar, but I restrained myself. The FNP would have been proud.

6 unpitted variety olives in a vinegar, olive oil, dill brine
11.5 oz V-8 juice with 1/4 tsp. cinnamon
Med/Dose Administration Explanation

That's right, no meds midday. We've stopped the Detrol (and I note that her UTI is finally clearing up fine, thank you). While she's on antibiotics, a least, she's on 2 Niferex-150 capsules. If being on this dose and type of iron seems to work well for her, then this will not change.
No particular reason for deciding to switch stats to midday. I just figured it was time. I chose to begin surveying only dinner stats because it is these stats that are medially unpredictable. I didn't want to be freaked every day as I figured I would be from midday readings, and beginning of the day readings are always wonderful, unless Mom is ill, when I began my new stat regimen (after seeing the FNP on 1/21/05).
So, yeah, I'm mildly surprised at her blood sugar. Wow. I wonder if this is typical. And, I wonder if the simple act of observing it will bring it down, simply because I'll be subconsciously looking for ways to do so, and implementing them almost without thinking.
Her blood pressure is nice, though, you have to admit.

BM Non-stat Dinner
Dinner:  2045  & Meds
What she ate:  approx 1.5 cups of a dessert custard with lots of berries and lots of sugar (see description below)

calcium-vitamin D/500-200 mg with meal believed to be an osteoporosis preventative

Because she had such a hearty lunch, we had a Just Desserts dinner. What we ended up having was a delicious rich berry custard that I made from a muffin mix. I wrote the recipe as I created it. The thing is, it turned out completely different than I expected, although delicious. I decided not to publish the recipe until I'd managed to create it a couple of times, although I may not try it again. It was created only because we happened to have a 2 year old box of blueberry muffin mix.
Goodness! I almost forgot! Her Bowel Movement occurred between lunch and dinner. Average volume; excellent consistency; clean, easy elimination.

Well, she seems to be doing very well. Up on her own well before noon, announced a healthy appetite when she sat to breakfast, which was served and mostly eaten before noon, all my chores are done, she's reading an issue of Oprah, waiting patiently for me to finish this and start the movie that neither of us has seen, What Dreams May Come. I'll give her antibiotics, make sure she's bathroomed, set her up in the living room and we'll watch a movie of which we're both skeptical. Should be an interesting afternoon.

The reason I've deleted, for the time being, lunch stats, is that Mom is taking two Niferex pills at the outside meals of the day, is no longer taking Detrol and, although she does have what amounts to a small lunch sometime midday, because she's sleeping so much and eating so well at breakfast and dinner her lunch has been so insignificant that I've either been recording it as following breakfast or previous to dinner. Today, her lunch consisted of an 8 oz. carton of artificially sweetened yoghurt and 7 pimiento stuff olives, which she ate around 1500.
