Breakfast went well, as well as it could. I continue to fight this damned cold, so I spend as much time as possible in bed or medicating myself and feeling crummy. This is why Mom arose late this morning. I let her.
She seemed to need the lisinopril, this morning. I'm not sure why.

Sometime before I awoke from a nap at a little before 1800, Mom had arisen, been up "for awhile", which could mean a couple of hours, hungered and looked around and found a jar of raspberry preserves, some bread and butter. I noticed the detritous, especially the fact that the raspberry preserves were in the refrigerator, which is not where we normally keep them. When I saw the evidence I took her blood glucose for the first time this evening, even though she, not surprisingly, wasn't hungry. After the first reading above I immediately gave her the aloe vera gel and a glass of V-8 juice with cinnamon. However, she had apparently eaten enough preserves and bread to sugar a good sized horse; that's what the preserves jar told me, anyway. That's why I took her blood sugar again when she finally got hungry, again, around 2000.
I'm sure the fact that we haven't moved, much, in the last few days, hasn't helped her blood sugar and blood pressure situation. I insisted on some walkering this morning, since we hadn't done therapy exercises since Tuesday, but neither of us was into it. We kind of slogged up and down the driveway (I certainly didn't want to go anywhere, considering how I felt, and she was agreeable) and I was pleased when, after about 4 laps, she wanted to quit. I hadn't wanted to start.
So, we had a mediocre day, and it showed in the stats.

Both of us have been punk today, and we both just went with it. I woke up early, early in the morning, went back to bed at 0630 and didn't reawaken until I heard Mom awaken. By that time, I was beginning to suffer the effects of what is, apparently, a mild cold. Mom simply wanted to have an "easy" day. I was up for that, since I needed to follow up phone calls and, as the day has progressed, I've felt progressively worse. Lunch, again, was popcorn and V-8 juice and cinnamon, with Iron and vitamin C but without stats.

Actually, the cottage cheese was eaten before dinner, while I was struggling to awaken from yet another nap that we both took, today, me having taken ibuprofen to quell a fever I developed early this afternoon. My mother was ravenous. I could barely eat. I'm hoping that, tomorrow, we'll finally have a somewhat more active day, although, truthfully, I'm feeling pretty low, physically, this evening. Mom, though, is full of energy, again, finally, which is good. Perhaps she'll be up for awhile. That would be good.

I was ecstatic with her blood sugar reading, considering what and how much she ate, yesterday. She didn't sleep well last night, was up and down and, luckily, I heard her and was up and down with her. "Just restless," she said. I was concerned that she might, when she finally awoke, be running high on both her stats, but she was right one the money.
Once again, although she did have lunch, again V-8 juice with cinnamon and a 3.5 oz bag of microwave popcorn (in case you're wondering, she goes on popcorn binges when that's all she wants for lunch so that's all I give her...it is always at her suggestion), and with it her iron supplement and vitamin C, I took no stats. I can't remember what we were doing, but I forgot.

It was none of our typical dinners, that I remember, and I didn't get pick-up food. I was pretty distracted, throughout the day, and Mom slept a lot, up and down, on and off. What did we have for dinner?!? I really can't remember!

This is the day we went to Mesa for her doctor's appointment. although no further stats were taken, medicines were given, so I am going to post approximately what she had for lunch and dinner, and what medications I gave her.

Lunch
Lunch:  12:45  & Meds
What she ate:  1 3.5 oz bag of microwave popcorn
11.5 oz V-8 juice with 1/4 tsp. cinnamon
Med/Dose Administration Explanation
18 mg Iron Protein Succinylate 2 18 mg tab with meal to pull her out of what I hope is her temporarily severely anemic state
vitamin C/500 mg 1/2 1000 mg tab with iron supplement helps the body metabolize iron

I, frankly, forgot to take stats during lunch. We had planned to go out for lunch, but Mom decided she wasn't that hungry. Until a half hour after she finished the popcorn. Then, she decided she wanted a full lunch, too late. We were due at her doctor's office in half an hour.     After the doctor's appointment I picked up a bag of Cheetos, one of her favorite chips, for her to snack on, since it was going to be at least 3 hours until dinner, if not longer. She ate the entire bag.

Dinner
Dinner:  ?  & Meds
What she ate:  approx 8 oz of barbequed boneless beef ribs and chicken leg meat
approx 6 oz potato salad
approx 4 oz baked beans
approx 1/10th of a strawberry-rhubarb pie with approx 6 oz Cool Whip
Med/Dose Administration Explanation
36 mg Iron Protein Succinylate 2 18 mg tabs with meal to pull her out of what I hope is her temporarily severely anemic state
vitamin C/500 mg 1/2 1000 mg tab with iron supplement helps the body metabolize iron
glipizide ER/10 mg 1 pill with meal standard breakfast and dinner med to increase cells' sensitivity to insulin

I purposely did not take stats...I didn't want to know. I wanted her to enjoy dinner with friends and I wanted to enjoy her experience of it. She ate heartily, as you can see. She'd done quite a bit of walkering, that day, at the doctor's office, Costco and our friend's house. And, she was feeling great, since the doctor was so very pleased with her at her appointment. Our friends were thrilled to see her. It was a day to go without stats and just enjoy life and its goodness.

I remember that we had bacon for breakfast this morning, instead of ham, surprisingly, even though we still have ham (lots of it). Other than that, I don't remember much about breakfast except that she ate well, and, I gave her lisinopril.

She did have a lunch of sorts. Midway between breakfast and dinner I gave her a 3.5 oz bag of microwave popcorn, V-8 juice and cinnamon, but no pills and no stats were taken. She ate heartily at dinner. We had an exercise session, today, which I haven't entered. As well, I had some groceries to pick up for our trip, and she got some walkering in early this evening before dinner.

Since I'm still on my "Labor Day Holiday", I allowed her to wake up at her pleasure. In fact, at about 0950 I left to do a short errand and she was at the edge of her bed, ready to start her day, when I got back.
I'm assuming her BP is up because of the antibiotics and the UTI. I was suprised to discover that as of 9/2/04 no bacteria showed up in her urine, although white blood cells did. I assume this was the beginning of her UTI, so it may not be E. Coli, this time. I'm sure, though, that the bleeding was from some sort of infection because the antibiotics stopped the bleeding within less than 24 hours. Hopefully, her PCP will take another urinalysis on 9/8/04, when we have an appointment scheduled.     Otherwise, she ate well, seemed in good humor, then as digestion set in decided she was going to take a nap, which I nixed. Not until after lunch, I told her.
As of this writing she actually hasn't consumed the cranberry juice, yet, but she'll be drinking it while she exercises, which we'll be doing in about a quarter hour.

I think her blood glucose was high because, well, I think I may have forgotten to give her glipizide ER this morning. As soon as I read her numbers I had deja vu of the napkin upon which I dole her pills sitting there without the glipizide, and another of handing her the "important pills" to take just before eating, of which there were two, today, and I clearly remember putting the aspirin out. I also remember, as I was studying the pills after placing them on the napkin, that something appeared to be missing, but I couldn't figure out what it was. So I guess the glipizide was missing. Considering this, her blood glucose actually looks quite good.
I believe her BP was low because of the combination of the lisinopril and the heavy duty exercise session just before lunch. That is one thing about my mother's blood pressure: It operates just like it's supposed to when exercising; it goes down instead of up.
Anyway, when it came time for the feed, she said she wasn't hungry, but I needed to get something in her to help her digest the Iron Protein Succinylate (which, unlike other iron supplements, works best with food). So, I tempted her with popcorn and V-8 juice, and it worked.

She was hungry enough this evening to eat a hearty helping (which she requested, I am pleased to note) of macaroni and cheese with lots of meat and vegetables in it and all her salad. Her blood glucose was good, especially considering that she only got one dose of glipizide ER today. Her blood pressure was right on the money for her. As well, she didn't over sleep today, even though I was willing to allow her to do so. I have no complaints, worries or criticisms, tonight.

Yeah, I was surprised at her blood pressure, too, but this tends to happen when she has a UTI and is on antibiotics, so, of course, I gave her lisinopril. She had a good appetite, and was bright-eyed and bushy tailed, although, when I began to discover that I had to go out to replenish some supplies I hadn't been monitoring, she didn't want to go. As it turns out, she did go, though, when I realized that I was going to have to go to three stores and be gone longer than I thought.
In a way, I'm glad her blood pressure goes up when she has a UTI and is on antibiotics. Considering the kidney protection that the lisinopril affords, it's a good thing to be able to give her lisinopril when she has her UTI.

Med/Dose Administration Explanation
levaquin/250 mg 1 tab just before meal for her UTI

That's right, no iron at lunch, because of the levaquin. Her blood glucose shows the remnants of the samples she consumed at Costco. Not bad, considering how much and what she sampled. At one point, while I was getting eggs, she parked herself at the "Pizza Bagel Bites" kiosk and had downed probably four half "Bites" (I asked the tender) before I hunted her up and dragged her away. She also had animal cookies, mesquite broiled chicken, bits of salad with a balsamic vinegar dressing and a couple of chunks of "energy bars", which, typically, are loaded with refined sugar, the fastest energy food available. Luckily, she didn't notice the ice cream sampling kiosk. All in all, though, her body worked on all these things very well. She ate a good lunch, too, then was too tired for words, looked at me as if through a veil and after I made her finish her V-8 juice she headed into her room for a nap.

She slept for a good three and a half hours and was ravenous when she awoke. I'd been baking the chicken pot pie and she could smell it (amazing how her senses are reviving since she quit smoking) laying in bed as she awoke. Although her diastolic was a touch low, I gave her lisinopril anyway. She ate with unusual zest and speed, finishing her dinner about the same time as me, and, these days (and for about a year now), I've developed the habit of eating pretty fast because there is always something else I need to do.
This time, the UTI and the antibiotics don't seem to be affecting either her appetite or her ability to hold down food, which leads me to believe that she is on the right dose of the right medicine. As well, I doubt that she's very anemic, if at all.
After dinner she felt as though she'd "like a little something sweet", so I gave her three sugar free (sweetened with sucralose) York Peppermint Patties with some coffee. "The perfect dessert," she declared, "just the right flavor, just the right amount." She's a sucker for these candies. I'll have to check and see if Costco sells them, as, otherwise, they are terribly expensive and come in bags of only 8 patties.
I forgot her cranberry juice, today, which I probably shouldn't have done, but her UTI seems to be clearing up, anyway. It's even more astounding because I've been drinking cranberry juice in water all day long. Oh well. Better luck tomorrow.
