That's right, late start to the day, mainly because I had a very late end to yesterday and slept in until 1100 this morning. I needed my coffee, so I waited until noon to awaken Mom. She was sitting on the edge of her bed when I entered her room. Blood sugar looks good.

vitamin C/500 mg 1/2 1000 mg tab with iron supplement helps the body metabolize iron

Well, obviously, we had the heartiness of dinner for lunch, today, because I am intending that we'll have a Just Desserts dinner of pumpkin cheesecake with homemade raspberry-maple sauce.
I'm expecting her blood sugar reading to be high when I take it before we eat our Just Desserts dinner, because she hasn't taken any diabetic medication since breakfast. She will, however, be receiving her medication with dinner, so I also expect her blood sugar to be politely normal in the morning; although, if it is a bit high, it won't surprise me...there's a lot of sugar in both the cheesecake and the raspberry-maple sauce. It make take awhile for her Ancient body to work this off.

Dinner:  2130  & Meds
What she ate:  1/2 of a Costco sized pumpkin cheesecake dressed with approx 1/3 cup raspberry-maple sauce
Med/Dose Administration Explanation
100% Aloe Vera gel/1 oz just before meal helps increase the cells' sensitivity to insulin when used with glipizide
36 mg Iron Protein Succinylate 2 18 mg tabs with meal to pull her out of what I hope is her temporarily severely anemic state

lisinopril/2.5 mg 1/2 of 5 mg tab with meal given for kidney protection when her blood pressure can handle it
vitamin E/400 IU with meal given for anti-coagulant properties
garlic/1250 mg with meal given for anti-coagulant properties
calcium-vitamin D/500-200 mg with meal believed to be an osteoporosis preventative

I told my mother (because she takes an interest in her blood sugar and blood pressure readings), just before I took her blood sugar for this meal, that I expected it to be "between 160 & 180". It came in exactly between the two. I expected this because it had only been about three hours since she had last eaten and that meal had a higher amount of refined carbohydrates (the macaroni) than is normal for any meal in this house.
I'm very pleased with her blood pressure. I caught her while she was deeply involved in a Deep Space 9 episode and off oxygen (I mention this for my reference), thus she was extremely relaxed and concentrating on something that kept her from moving too much, talking to the cat or talking to me. Despite her blood pressure, her feet were, again, the tiniest bit swollen, but she didn't hack/cough today at all, so I think they were swollen because she was up on them more than has been lately normal.

At 1115 this morning I looked at my mother across the breakfast table and said, "My goodness, I think you're going to be done with breakfast long before you usually start it!" I think the flower delivery worked very well. I was right about it stimlating her into rousing before she usually does.
She's down again, with 500 mg of acetaminophen under her belt, but was up a decent amount of time, until 1307, so, I'm satisfied. She, again, was experiencing "a hitch in her giddy-up".

Lunch
Blood Glucose:
    Time:  1637
    Reading:  66
Blood Pressure:

    time unless necessary

Lunch:  1645  & Meds
What she ate:  approx 8 oz Marie Callendar Beef Pot Roast soup with extra green onions, green peas, and beef (jerky)
6 unpitted variety olives in a vinegar, olive oil, dill brine
2 slices each dofino, medium cheddar and swiss cheese (less than 1 oz per type)
Med/Dose Administration Explanation
36 mg Iron Protein Succinylate 2 18 mg tabs with meal to pull her out of what I hope is her temporarily severely anemic state
vitamin C/500 mg 1/2 1000 mg tab with iron supplement helps the body metabolize iron

I know, no V-8 juice today, which means no cinnamon at lunch, but her blood sugar was so low I didn't think it was necessary to worry about controlling it. I made sure she got some olives in, though.
She'd had a 3 hour nap just previous to lunch. This reading tells me, as well, that the problem yesterday was very likely that she dropped her glipizide ER; thus, she didn't take it.

Dinner
Blood Glucose:
    Time:  2032
    Reading:  88
Blood Pressure:
    Time:  2035

approx 3/4 cup cottage cheese well peppered
dinner salad on a bed of greens (no iceberg lettuce) with sliced radishes, grated carrots, chopped Bermuda onion, chopped green pepper, chopped stuffed green olives, a sprinkling of parmesan cheese and crumbled White Cheddar Nachos Doritos with about 2 Tbl home made Buttermilk Ranch dressing
Med/Dose Administration Explanation
100% Aloe Vera gel/1 oz just before meal helps increase the cells' sensitivity to insulin when used with glipizide
36 mg Iron Protein Succinylate 2 18 mg tabs with meal to pull her out of what I hope is her temporarily severely anemic state

glipizide ER/10 mg 1 pill with meal standard breakfast and dinner med to increase cells' sensitivity to insulin

calcium-vitamin D/500-200 mg with meal believed to be an osteoporosis preventative
1/2 cup pure cranberry juice w/12 oz water with or after meal standard twice a day supplement for kidney protection and enhancement of waste management

Look at that, doesn't her blood sugar look nice? Can't believe it, especially since she had a sedentary day. The blood pressure? She talked and moved, but the diastolic tells me that the systolic was purely circumstantial. Her appetite was great. She'd been up since 1600 and, here we are at 2300 and she's still up. I'm very pleased.

Fairly decently timed morning ritual, this morning. I even exclaimed to my mother as I set her breakfast in front of her, "My god, Mom, I believe you're going to be done with breakfast before noon!" She laughed.
I was surprised at how low her blood sugar is. I don't like it getting this low. It surprised me, considering the Just Desserts dinner we had last night. I need to be careful, I guess, to make sure that she doesn't eat Just Desserts dinners too early or that I add something in order to make sure she stays above 70 throughout the night. I'm glad I didn't let her sleep in until noon, this morning.

BM Lunch
Blood Glucose:
    Time:  1436
    Reading:  189
Blood Pressure:

    time unless necessary

Lunch:  1450  & Meds
What she ate:  1/2 3 oz bag "lite" microwave popcorn
8 unpitted variety olives in a vinegar, olive oil, dill brine
11.5 oz V-8 juice with 1/4 tsp. cinnamon

I know, her blood sugar was surprisingly high at lunch. I expected it to be a bit higher than "normal" because there was barely a three hour interval between breakfast and lunch, but she was hungry and I saw no reason to wait. The reading, though, shocked me. Then, I had a complicated deja vu experience and wondered if, maybe, when she took her medication this morning, she dropped her glipizide. I remember wondering that the last time this happened and I couldn't explain the high reading, then, I realized the reason I wondered this is because, normally, I supervise her med taking: I hand her the pills in ones or twos, caution her to make sure she doesn't drop them, especially the tiny ones (of which glipizide is one), watch her, direct her to drink after taking each set...and I didn't do that this morning. I remember thinking the same thing the last time I was surprised with an unusually high reading...I think it was above 200, and it wasn't too long ago. I know she didn't eat anything between breakfast and lunch. And, I know that, at 3 hours from lunch, her blood sugar could be as high as 150 or so, but 189 is really pushing it, without some help. So, I need to be more careful, I think, make sure I always eyeball her when she's taking her meds, and see if we have any recurrences of this.
BM between breakfast and lunch - normal; gave her an antacid dose (2 tsp) of Phillip's Milk of Magnesia this morning at breakfast for hiccoughing.
Also, sometime after lunch and before she laid down for a nap (which was fairly long, today) I gave her 500 mg acetaminophen; she admitted to aching and stiffness when I noticed she was walking like a robot and asked her if how her body felt, today.     In case you're a casual reader, I've decided to record her Bowel Movements, as I remember to, from now on, so that I have a history in case any more problems recur like the the one some days ago about which I wrote.

Dinner
Blood Glucose:
    Time:  1920
    Reading:  128
Blood Pressure:
    Time:  1924
    BP:  138/68
    Pulse:  54

Dinner:  1930  & Meds
What she ate:  approx 2 cups bean soup
1/3 of a 9" "pie plate" of buttermilk cornbread (no sugar), baked with green chilis, MPBIL's Southwestern Fire spice and about a cup of shredded sharp yellow cheddar
Med/Dose Administration Explanation
100% Aloe Vera gel/1 oz just before meal helps increase the cells' sensitivity to insulin when used with glipizide
36 mg Iron Protein Succinylate 2 18 mg tabs with meal to pull her out of what I hope is her temporarily severely anemic state
vitamin C/500 mg 1/2 1000 mg tab with iron supplement helps the body metabolize iron
glipizide ER/10 mg 1 pill with meal standard breakfast and dinner med to increase cells' sensitivity to insulin
lisinopril/2.5 mg 1/2 of 5 mg tab with meal given for kidney protection when her blood pressure can handle it
vitamin E/400 IU with meal given for anti-coagulant properties
garlic/1250 mg with meal given for anti-coagulant properties
calcium-vitamin D/500-200 mg with meal believed to be an osteoporosis preventative
1/2 cup pure cranberry juice w/12 oz water with or after meal standard twice a day supplement for kidney protection and enhancement of waste management

With this dinner reading, I am almost positive that the problem with her blood sugar, today, was that she dropped her glipizide at breakfast. I even searched the floor for it, both at lunch and dinner; but it could have rolled under the hutch. The lunch she had, and the interval between lunch and dinner, is practically guaranteed to bring her back into normal range, but her reading wasn't quite normal tonight. I have no idea what I was doing that seemed more important than monitoring her pill taking, but, well, no more. In fact, I almost left her pills unattended in front of her this evening, then grabbed them back, realizing that if I left them unattended for even a minute, she might decide to pop them and, once again, lose one to the floor.
Decent dinner hour, decent interval between lunch and dinner...other than the pill fiasco, I'm pleased with today.

1/2 cup pure cranberry juice w/12 oz water with or after meal standard twice a day supplement for kidney protection and enhancement of waste management

New procedure, which I discussed in The Mom & Me Journals dot Net: I'm not going to take her blood pressure any more at breakfast and lunch, unless it appears to be necessary for health reasons. I think her blood pressure will remain steadier, over all, if I bother her, during times of good health, only once a day. The best time to take it, for both of us, is evening, when she's settled in her rocker, reading or watching TV, and she's been sitting there, at rest, for awhile.
Yes, there was a considerable lag between the time I awoke her (noon straight up), the time she extended a hand for blood sugar testing and the time that she finally ate breakfast. It was a very slow day for her, today; but, her appetite was good, so I'm not worried about her being sick.

Lunch

vitamin C/500 mg 1/2 1000 mg tab with iron supplement helps the body metabolize iron

Although lunch would seem at a proper interval from breakfast, this is getting out of hand, these late mornings. Obviously, a proper interval between lunch and dinner would put us eating dinner between 2300 and 0000. Not acceptable, mainly because my day actually has to start quite a bit earlier than noon, every day, and I can't be going to bed every night at 0100 or 0200 and getting up at 0600 or 0700. We talked about this, tonight, which I'll discuss in The Mom & Me Journals dot net.

vitamin E/400 IU with meal given for anti-coagulant properties
garlic/1250 mg with meal given for anti-coagulant properties
calcium-vitamin D/500-200 mg with meal believed to be an osteoporosis preventative

I have to admit, I held my breath when taking her blood sugar this evening. I was hoping that it would be in a normal range so that she'd be able to tolerate the Just Desserts dinner I'd already promised her. The 120 at lunch made me a little anxious, especially since "dinner" occurred less than 3 hours after lunch. No problem, as it turns out. Good. When she isn't up as much, during the day, it works better not to feed her as much.

The earlier I awaken her, now (and, this morning, I awakened her, hoping to move us, eventually, further and further forward) the longer it takes to get her going enough to feed her. Once again, I thought I had the perfect time to take her blood pressure this morning, but it didn't work...she talked to the cat, scratched herself...and, I think, she' wasn't completely recovered from awakening. Oh well, we're working on it.
Nothing else unusual about breakfast, this morning.

Lunch Non-Stats
Lunch:  1645  & Meds

vitamin C/500 mg 1/2 1000 mg tab with iron supplement helps the body metabolize iron

That's right, no stats today. I was feeling edgy, my mother had taken an unusually long nap and has been sluggish and "easy", today; and our moods simply haven't matched. So, when she was finally up for lunch, I was snippy, fed her, but had no interest in interacting with her otherwise, which was probably best, that way I didn't irritate her.

I'm satisfied with her blood sugar, today. Her blood pressure is looking better. We didn't do any exercises, formal or informal, today. Oh well.

I'm not taking blood pressure today. I decided to see if I couldn't talk myself into calming down about this particular stat and, since there isn't much I can do about her blood pressure, at the moment and it isn't dangerously high, I figured it would help both Mom and me if I laid off for at least a day. We both get very tense, now, when I take it, primarily because I approach taking her blood pressure from a tense perspective, right now.

I'm not sure why her blood sugar was 140, but I'm not worried. It does this, once in awhile, despite what I do.

I don't know what got into me with the dessert, but I sensed she was in a dessert mood tonight. It was light. I'll be curious to see how it shows up in her blood sugar, tomorrow morning.
She ate a good dinner tonight, asked for "a little more" of the chicken soup. Of course, she almost always eats good, and well, but she's been in a very good mood, today. Probably has something to do with the chicken soup disaster.

I'm still a bit nervous about her blood pressure, but I'm also getting so snippy when I take it that I have a feeling I affecting it (although I know it is still higher than normal). I planned the Cobb salad in order to make sure she had lots of fiber and the natural moisture contained in vegetables, for obvious bowel movement reasons. Luckily, she loves Cobb Salad; it's one of her favorite meals. We've come a looooong way from 1994!
